Proxmox, adventures in self hosting.

Proxmox is a hyper visor for hosting containers and virtual machines. I have been using Proxmox for a couple of years now to self host a variety of local services. Primarily as a NAS for backing up data and network file sharing . Along with serving media and data across my local network. I’ll get into some of the VM and containers I am running in upcoming posts.

Here is a screenshot of done of the VM and CT I am running in my home lab.

Proxmox is easy to install. You can download the ISO directly from their site. Use Balena Etcher or Rufus to write the ISO to a USB thumb drive and you’re good to go.

Hardware requirements for Proxmox are not excessive. I would suggest at least a 4 core processor and 16 gigabytes of RAM, but I have ran it on less. The better your hardware the more containers and VM’s you’ll be able to run without any performance issues.

An old PC or laptop is perfect for your first time using Proxmox. You will wipe the whole system during install, so if there is anything on that old computer you need back it up. You’ve been warned.

Pertinent links are below.

Until next time.
